Surgical Information
The implantable Avery Diaphragm Pacing System is a replacement for a mechanical ventilator and can offer partial or complete respiratory support. Mechanical Ventilation can cause functional limitations in people who use it, like decreased mobility or difficulty speaking.
With surgery, one can breathe without ventilation support. And many people regain the ability to speak after diaphragmatic pacing. The process of moving from a ventilator to a pacemaker requires conditioning and strengthening your diaphragm using specially designed diaphragmatic breathing exercises. The surgery is minimally invasive and has a low complication rate (less than 1%). DPS is a rare procedure, it’s only performed by thoracic specialist surgeons that are familiar with the Diaphragm Pacing System.
